Walter C. Galekovic, age 94, formerly of Greenville, passed away Thursday afternoon, December 18. 2025, in Newbury, OH.
He was born in Greenville on August 30, 1931 to Charles and Eva (Benkovic) Galekovic. Walt was a 1952 graduate of Penn High School. He served active duty in the U. S. Army from 1952-1954 and in the U. S. Army Reserve from 1954 – 1960. Walt retired from the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad as a foreman in the carpentry shop following more than 30 years of employment.
He was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Fitzmartin Council #1446. Walt was also a longtime member of Eagles #805. He loved carpentry, woodworking, and restoring his father’s 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air. Walt was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors, and he truly enjoyed attending and supporting his grandsons’ activities and athletic events.
On February 22, 1956, he married the former Carol Mary Roche; she passed away February 27, 2022.
Walt is survived by three daughters: Marilyn (Don) Morse of Colorado, Kathleen Galekovic of Arizona, and Linda (Bill) Sopchak of Ohio; a son, Dale Galekovic of Florida; four grandchildren: Adam, Joshua, and Matthew Sopchak and Nicholas Galekovic; and a great-grandson, Luka Galekovic.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two sisters, Margaret Barber and Kathryn Brown.
Services:
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, 12/22/25, in St. Michael’s Cemetery Chapel, Greenville, with Fr. Raymond Gramata as Celebrant. Military Honors will be rendered by Greenville VFW Post #3374 at the conclusion of the Mass. Family and Friends will be received from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM on 12/22/25 in Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 366-368 S. Main St. Greenville. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Greenville High School Athletic Fund, 9 Donation Rd. Greenville, PA 16125.
