Vivian Ruth (Mowry) Thompson, 92, formerly of Quarry Hill Road in Greenville, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2025. She was under the care of Sherwood Oaks in Cranberry Township.
Vivian was born November 13, 1932, in Greenville, to Norman E. and Vanchie A. (Bear) Mowry (Sherbondy). Growing up, she enjoyed taking care of horses and farm animals on her family’s property and supporting the war effort as a member of the Girl Scouts and American Junior Red Cross.
While attending Greenville High School, Vivian played basketball and volleyball and worked as a cashier at G.C. Murphy. Upon graduating in 1951, she was hired as a secretary at Westinghouse in Sharon.
Vivian was introduced to the love of her life, Kenneth Cameron Thompson, by her cousin, Hartford. Their marriage of 65 years began April 11, 1953, when they were wed at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Fredonia. While serving in the U.S. Army and traveling overseas during the Korean War, Ken wrote to his new bride nearly every day.
Ken built their home in Greenville, which was lovingly tended to by Vivian for more than 60 years. It was here that she raised their daughters, Colleen and Cheryl, and took care of her sprawling yard and vegetable garden. Devoted to her church, Vivian taught Sunday school, worked in the nursery, and led Vacation Bible School, once memorably transporting sheep in the backseat of her car for the children to enjoy. She was a proud member of Greenville Christian Assembly.
Vivian treasured her role as “Mama” to her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She enjoyed visiting with family on the front porch of her home and later on a balcony overlooking a pond at Sherwood Oaks.
Vivian is survived by her daughters, Colleen (Thomas) Sigler of Cranberry Township and Cheryl (Gregory) Beskid of North Huntingdon; her grandchildren, Megan (Matthew) Monaghan of Columbus, Ohio, Matthew (Elaine) Sigler of San Diego, California, Corey (Anne) Beskid of Severna Park, Maryland, Christopher (Chelsey) Beskid of Hampton, Virginia, and Jonathan (Sydney) Beskid of Greensburg; and great-grandchildren Mila Sigler, Owen Beskid, Camryn Sigler, Ariya Beskid and Grace Monaghan.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Norman E. Mowry, Jr., and Duff L. Mowry; and her beloved husband Kenneth C. Thompson.
The family would like to thank Sherwood Oaks for their kind and attentive care, as well as Bridges Hospice.
