Norma Mae (Nickmeyer) College left this world on October 9, 2026, at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, strength, vitality, and family.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA on Valentine’s Day, 1930, she was the cherished wife of the late John Quinn College, beloved mother of John Walter College (Donna), the late Timothy Quinn College, the late Kimberly Ellen Scabilloni (Daniel), Scott Norman College (Suzanne), and Karla Diane College (Levi Littrell); known as Gammy to grandchildren Luke, Joy, Leah, Sky, Christy, Tim, Johnathan, Shannon, Nicholas, Amanda, Troy, and Cash; great-grandchildren Cole, Ben, Wesley, Lydia, Audrey, Marissa, Dominic, George and Nina (and one more on the way!); daughter of Walter John and Nellie Mae (Hunter) Nickmeyer; sister to Jeanette Regan (William), Joyce Phillips (Jack), Walter Nickmeyer (Gerry) and aunt to numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Norma was blessed with remarkable health and strength for nearly all of her 96 years, living life fully and possessing a deep love for the great outdoors. In her earlier years as a mother, Norma was the definition of adventurous and hands-on. She would load a heavy wooden canoe on top of the family station wagon, pack it to the brim with her own kids and the neighborhood kids, and head to the lake for a day of fishing and swimming. Ever patient, she happily spent most of those days baiting hooks and untangling fishing lines.
She was always involved in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, helping with homework, sewing, cooking large meals, and getting the kids outside. Norma was a true animal lover; any injured or orphaned creature that someone brought home was welcomed. Her household included not just cats and dogs, but non-traditional pets like pigeons (Pete lived with the family for 7 years), baby raccoons, orphaned skunks, injured birds, snakes, turtles, bunnies, a pig, and even a “mudpuppy.” As the mother and grandmother of hunters and fishers, and with a large garden every summer, her dinners were always healthy and delicious. Traditional Sunday roast dinners were a staple that brought the whole family together.
Norma always dreamed of having a summer lake house, and in 1973, she made that dream come true. For decades, it served as a special gathering place that brought immense joy to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family remains forever thankful that she made that happen so long ago, as it allowed generations of family memories to grow there.
Norma found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved feeding the birds, watching the wildlife in her backyard, reading, and tackling crossword puzzles. Above all else, she cherished every moment spent with her family. After her beloved Quinn passed away in 2018, Norma continued on with her signature strength, driving until she was 91 and later adopting “Kitty” who brought her boundless joy and love in her later years.
