Tuesday September 02, 2025 we mourn the loss of Margreta Rose Massie. Mom wore many hats as a financial manager/secretary, semi-professional vacation itinerary planner, music teacher and peace maker. Mom was the calm voice of reason in a household of children. In all these tasks, mom was the love that held the meaning of family together and giving of oneself in everyday living.
Margreta grew up in Forest Hills, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, daughter of Albert P. Strom and Thelma (Miller) Strom. Her interest playing violin placed her playing concerts in Wilkinsburg Civic Orchestra and with the Westinghouse Educational Center Symphony Orchestra under Director Eugene Reichenfield, who was also her private violin instructor. She was a member of the Greenville Symphony for over over 50 years.
Margreta attended Thiel College and Augustana College graduating with Degrees in Biology and English with PA teaching certification. At Thiel she met her future husband Paul R. Massie and built their house with the help of friends and family in Greenville. Greta was an honorary member of Beta Beta Beta Sorority. Her career of service to others was teaching for the Greenville School District. She taught at West Side Elementary and Hempfield Elementary schools retiring in 1989.
Before and during retirement years Margreta and her family traveled with tent trailers, van, or motorhome cross country to state/national parks, beaches and historical monuments.
Mom would assist Paul R. like a GPS (long before Google maps) using only paper maps and driving hundreds of miles cross country with enthusiasm toward adventures, family reunions, and snowbird escapes to Florida.
Married for 70 years, Margreta R. Massie is survived by son Paul and wife Marianne Massie, son James and wife Sharon Massie, grandchildren Nathan and wife Melanie Massie, Michele Cornwell and great granddaughter Katie Cornwell, sister Alma Kincaid and brother Alan Strom. She is also survived by beloved nieces and nephews; Mark and wife Connie Massie, Nancy Massie and husband Steve Cockley, Carol and husband Joe Givan, Susan and husband Dean Smith, Linda Finney, Richard Gregory, Brad and wife Lynell Kincaid, Rod and wife Darla Kincaid and Leigh and husband Mark Tanquist.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Alice Gregory, brother-in-law Norbert Gregory, husband Paul R. Massie, son Arthur, Nephew David Massie M.D., sister-in-law Anne B. Massie, brother-in-law Walter A. Massie M.D. and brother-in-law Ron Kincaid.
