Janet M. Runkle, age 88, of Fredonia passed away Saturday evening, November 8, 2025, in UPMC Hamot.
She was born in Greenville on May 29, 1937 to Joseph I. and Leona “Nonie” C. (Becker) McClellan. Janet was a 1955 graduate of St. Michael’s High School and worked at Westinghouse Electric for three years prior to becoming a lifelong homemaker.
She was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Greenville where she formerly served as Eucharistic Minister and Lecturer. Janet also was a founding member of “Where the Corners Meet” Quilt Guild in New Wilmington, was active in the Embroidery Group of Mercer, and was a member of a small sewing group in Fredonia. Janet enjoyed serving her community, and from 1974-1982, she served two terms on the Fredonia Boro Council, having been the first woman ever elected to the Council She volunteered with the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts and with cancer and heart fund drives at various times. Janet enjoyed quilting, handwork, and entertaining family members and friends. Most of all, she loved making cookies for her grandchildren and taking her grandchildren on annual camping trips.
On July 5, 1958, Janet married Richard W. Runkle at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church; he survives.
In addition to her husband, Janet is survived by two daughters, Pamela Dudeck of Hubbard, OH and Catherine (John) Tomerlin of Allegany, NY; two sons, Richard Runkle of Fredonia and John (Sabrina) Runkle of Sugar Grove, NC; a brother, Joseph McClellan of West Grove, PA; two sisters, Joanna Jones of Brownsburg, IN and Jean Rinella of Greenville; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son-in-law, Lance Dudeck.
Services:
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, 11/13/25, in St. Michael Roman Catholic Church 85 N. High St. Greenville with Fr. Thomas N. Trocchio, Pastor of the Church, as Celebrant. Family and friends will be received from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Wednesday, 11/12/25, in Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 366-368 S. Main St. Greenville. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Mercer County Food Bank 109 S. Sharpsville Ave. Suite A Sharon, PA 16146 or Mercer County Area Agency on Aging, Inc. 133 North Pitt Street, Mercer, PA 16137.
