On August 4, 2024, two days after her 90th birthday and one day after what would have been her 67th anniversary, Janet Agnes (Paine) McParland joined her beloved husband, Dr. John McParland, at the gates of heaven. She is survived by children Jack (Pat, deceased) McParland, Janet (Steve) Baughman, Kevin McParland, Kate (Mark) Cianci, Tim (Audrey) McParland, and Jeanne (David) Comperchio; daughter-in-law, Pam McParland (Paul, deceased), grandchildren Margie (Greg) White, Ann McParland, Evan (Olivia) McParland, Tim (Morgan) McParland, Michelle and Jenna Baughman, Katie (Ethan) Perry, Nicholas (Hannah) Cianci, John (Gianna) Cianci and Daniel, Allison, Julie, Paul, Brandon, and Zachary Comperchio. Within the past several years, Janet was thrilled to welcome into the family 8 great-grandchildren: Everett Perry, Nicholas Cianci, Samuel Cianci, Rocco Cianci, Ave Cianci, Lucia Cianci, and Rory McParland, as well as another one on the way. She is also survived by her sisters Madeline (Joe) Moyer and Nancy (Glen) Owens, and an extremely large, very close extended family.
Sadly, Janet was predeceased by her daughter, Mary Pat, and son, Paul (Pam) McParland, daughter-in-law, Pat (Jack) McParland and grandson, Christian Comperchio and great-grandson, Isaiah Perry. She was also predeceased by her parents and siblings Robert Treat Paine & Mary Catherine (Lewis) Paine and her siblings Robert (Nedia) Paine, Elizabeth (Harold) Good, Mary Lou (Bashi) Mattarazzi, Kathryn (Wayne) Sattazahn and Joe Paine.
Janet graduated from Fitzgerald Nursing School in Philadelphia in 1955 and came to the Jamestown area where she began a career as a surgical nurse. Soon she caught the eye of Dr. John Joseph McParland and became “supermom” to a quickly growing family. Janet was the heartbeat of the family, keeping everyone organized and on track. As the family grew to include grandchildren, she became “Grandma” to all.
An avid sports fan from a very young age, she was an ardent Pirates & Steelers fan. Janet took great pride in attending sporting events and was always ready to share a child’s or grandchild’s latest statistics. She was recognized by Penn State University for having four children graduate. Every summer, she moved the family to a cottage on Pymatuning where she was ever ready to clean a fish, fix plumbing, or clean off the roof. A telephone was constantly at hand, as she was always ready to listen to her children and dispensed wise advice when asked.
Born to Robert Treat Paine & Mary Catherine Lewis Paine on August 2, 1934, at home in Lebanon, Pa, she was the youngest of eight children. She loved working with her father, a general contractor, so much that he made a little sawhorse for her to work alongside him in his workshop. She came by her carpentry skills naturally and often did her own home repairs as she could do them better than most carpenters. She also loved staying up to date in the medical field and would often read her husband's medical journals. She, like him, was also an excellent diagnostician. A natural athlete, she loved playing baseball with her children and then with her grandchildren. When she was in her fifties, she began race walking for fun and won many trophies in her age group when competing in local charity walks. She, like her mother and all of her sisters, was a fiercely competitive Yahtzee player. She loved making people laugh and would often sing old family songs and do other silly things (like doing somersaults for her grandchildren), who all affectionately referred to her as "Grandma-Mum or "Grandma on the Lake." She will be deeply missed by all.
Janet was active in St. Michael Roman Catholic Church and St. Margaret’s Mission, serving as a Eucharistic minister and singing in the choir. In 2021 Janet joined the St. Paul’s community. The extended McParland family extends their gratitude for the excellent, loving and compassionate care she received at St. Paul’s.
