James R. Legters, age 82, of Jamestown, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Wednesday evening, December 24, 2025.
He was born in Sharon on July 2, 1943 to Robert P. and Margaret A. (Stryker) Legters. Jim was a 1961 graduate of Sharpsville High School and completed his B.S. and M.S. in Education at Edinboro University. He retired from Reynolds School District following over 30 years as a teacher.
Jim was an active member and leader of State Line Church, Jamestown where he enjoyed singing in the choir among many other roles. He was a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and was a founding member of the Penn-Ohio Singers where he remained active throughout the years. Jim also enjoyed singing with multiple barbershop quartets as well as the Southern Gateway Chorus. In addition to singing, he enjoyed golfing, working outdoors, and attending and supporting his grandchildren’s activities.
On April 15, 1965, Jim married the former Patricia A. Herrick; she survives.
Also surviving are three sons: Christopher (Karen) Legters of Lower Burrell, Steven (Julie) Legters of Saxonburg, and Jeffrey (Lisa) Legters of West Chester, OH; a sister, Nancy (Ed) Burns of Lower Burrell; a brother, Fred Legters of Sacramento, CA; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; infant grandchildren; and a brother, Eric Legters.
Services:
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, 12/30/25, in State Line Church, 263 W. State Rd. Jamestown, PA 16134, with Pastor Paul Csonka officiating. Family and friends will be received on Monday, 12/29/25, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM in the Church. Burial will be in State Line Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to State Line Church (263 W. State Rd. Jamestown, PA 16134) or the Penn-Ohio Singers (Shenango Valley Chapter, 170 Wise Rd, Greenville, PA 16125).
