Hershel P. Spencer

Hershel P. Spencer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully, July 30th, 2026, surrounded by his wife and family.

Born on January 8, 1942, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, Hershel was the son of the late Gordon Roscoe Spencer and Strossie Mae (Nelson) Spencer. He attended Conneaut Lake High School before beginning a lifelong career as a journeyman millwright. He was employed by Greenville Steel Car Company from 1963 until 1985 and later by Trinity Industries from 1986 until his retirement in 2000. Throughout his career, Hershel was known for his strong work ethic, skilled craftsmanship, and dedication to providing for his family.

On October 13, 1963, Hershel married the love of his life, Evelyn E. Spencer. Together they shared a devoted marriage built on faith, love, and family, raising two children: Marsha VeVerka (Joe) and Ronald Spencer (Noel).

Hershel was the proud grandfather of Jared VeVerka, Nick VeVerka, Hope Spencer, and Emily Spencer, and the cherished great-grandfather of Evvy and Helen VeVerka (Nick and Izzy Veverka) and Ryker and Riggs Smith (Hope Spencer). His greatest joy was spending time with his family, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

A faithful member of Adamsville United Presbyterian Church in Adamsville, Pennsylvania, Hershel's unwavering faith was the foundation of his life. He could often be found sitting in his favorite recliner reading his Bible, finding peace and strength in God's Word.

Hershel loved the outdoors and especially cherished time spent deer hunting with his son, and he also enjoyed watching classic Westerns and delighted family and friends by reciting lines from his favorite cowboy movies. His quiet strength, generous spirit, steadfast faith, and love for his family will be remembered by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Hershel was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Mohra, and his brothers, William Spencer and Charles Luther Spencer.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 63 years, Evelyn E. Spencer; his daughter, Marsha VeVerka (Joe); his son, Ronald Spencer (Noel); his grandchildren, Jared VeVerka, Nick VeVerka, Hope Spencer, and Emily Spencer; his great-grandchildren, Evvy and Helen VeVerka and Ryker and Riggs Smith; his brother, David Spencer; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will deeply miss him.

Though he has left this earthly life, Hershel's legacy of faith, kindness, hard work, and unwavering love for his family will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.

Services:

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, 8/7/26, in Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 366-368 S. Main St. Greenville, with Rev. James Sodano officiating. Family and friends will be received in the Funeral Home on 8/7/26 from 11:30 AM until time of Service. Burial will be in Rocky Glen Cemetery, Adamsville, PA.
